Ants are the most common household invader — and where you see a few, thousands more are nearby. Some species also damage wood or contaminate food.
Small (1/16"–1/2"), six legs, elbowed antennae, and a narrow waist. Common types include odorous house ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants.
What attracts them: Sugary spills, grease, crumbs, pet food, and moisture. Carpenter ants are also drawn to damp or damaged wood.
Recurring trails, indoor swarmers, or any sign of carpenter ants — these can mean a large or wood-damaging colony that DIY won't reach.
