Camel crickets — also called spider crickets — are the humpbacked, long-legged jumpers that startle homeowners in basements and crawl spaces. They don't bite, but they thrive in damp, dark areas and can gather in large numbers.
Humpbacked, tan-to-brown bodies about 1/2"–1 1/2" with very long back legs and long antennae, and no wings. They jump when disturbed — often toward you, which is why they can seem aggressive.
What attracts them: Moisture and dark, humid spaces — damp basements, crawl spaces, garages, and areas with clutter or leaf litter against the foundation.
